Herbs – tasty partners for your garden plants

Basil -FAVORABLE- Asparagus, marigolds, tomatoes
Basil -ADVERSE- Flies, mosquitoes, rue, sage

 Basil – A Fragrant and Tasty Herb

Chives -FAVORABLE- Carrots
Chives -ADVERSE- Aphids, green flies

– Plant chives with carrots in order to improve growth and flavor.
– Chives will also repel aphids, which is  a nice benefit and provides yet another herb that can be used against aphids – some variety!

Cilantro (Coriander) -FAVORABLE- Asparagus, beans, peas, spinach, tachninid flies, parasitoid wasps, hoverflies
Cilantro (Coriander) -ADVERSE- Fennel, aphids, potato beetles, spider mites

– Cilantro is an interesting plant as it has benefits and can benefit from companion planting. It will enhance growth in asparagus and spinach if planted nearby, while it will gain enhanced growth if beans or peas are planted nearby.

Dill -FAVORABLE- Cabbage
Dill -ADVERSE- Carrots

Garlic -FAVORABLE- Beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, kale, lettuce, chili and bell peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, and ALL fruit trees
Garlic -ADVERSE- Aphids, beans, peas, spider mites, weevils

– Beets and cabbage will have improved flavor if planted with garlic.

Mint -FAVORABLE- Beets, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbages, cauliflower, chili and bell peppers, Chinese cabbage, eggplant, kale, lettuce, peas, squash, tomatoes
Mint 
-ADVERSE- Ants, aphids, chamomile, earwigs, mealbugs, parsley, slugs, snails, spider mites

– Some consider mint a weed as it will spread very quickly. It also likes a fertile, loamy soil and will seek out better soil conditions if needed, moving over large spaces to do so.
– Planting mint near peas, cabbage or tomatoes will improve their flavor.

Oregano -FAVORABLE- Broccoli, butter lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower
Oregano -ADVERSE- Cabbage butterfly, cucumber beetle

– Be mindful of where you plant oregano, as it will spread like a weed. A side benefit of oregano is that its blooms will attract butterflies (pretty!) AND mud dauber wasps, which feed on catapillars of all kinds.

Parsley -FAVORABLE- Asparagus
Parsley -ADVERSE- Mint

Thyme -FAVORABLE- Good just about anywhere in the garden!
Thyme -ADVERSE- Cabbage worms
